Police are hunting for suspects after a deadly early-morning shooting in Bekkersdal left nine people dead and 10 injured.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident occurred shortly before 01:00 at a licensed tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal. Reports indicate that approximately 12 unknown suspects arrived at the scene in a white kombi and a silver sedan, before opening fire on patrons inside the tavern.
Police said the suspects continued shooting randomly as they fled the scene, causing further panic and injuries in the surrounding area.Emergency services responded swiftly, and the injured victims were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Nine people were declared dead as a result of the attack.Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations, together with the Crime Detection Tracing Unit, are leading the investigation.
SAPS has also mobilised additional resources, including Forensic Crime Scene Management and Crime Intelligence, to assist in tracking down the suspects.The motive behind the shooting remains unknown and will be determined as investigations continue.
