Gauteng police have arrested a woman who was allegedly spotted pouring paraffin at a building that caught fire in Johannesburg’s central business district this morning.
A fire broke out at the corner of Commissioner and Nugget streets, killing two persons. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire that raged through the two-story building.
The bodies were found in the first floor of the building while the injured are believed to have jumped from a balcony, Several other people were safely evacuated from the two-storey building.
Johannesburg city manager Floyd Brink said the fire was believed to have been started deliberately.
Brink informed the media at the scene that one individual, a lady, had been apprehended for arson. While police investigations unfolded, the city’s forensic team was on the scene conducting their own investigations.
