Woman and Apprentice Arrested for Staging Own Kidnapping

A 23-year-old woman and a Mozambican national were arrested in Moroka, Soweto on Thursday after allegedly staging her own kidnapping in an elaborate scheme to demand ransom money from her family. Both suspects face charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the arrest following a week-long investigation that commenced on 23 January 2025 after the woman was reported missing in Randburg. Soon after , a ransom demand was made to her family ,which led to Police intervention.

The SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Unit alongside Crime Intelligence, Gauteng Provincial Investigation Unit (PIU), Johannesburg Flying Squad, Randburg Detectives, and private security companies worked together in tracking down the alleged kidnappers.

SAPS spokesperson, Amanda van Wyk stated that the team acted on intelligence , which led them to an identified address in Moroka, where the supposed victim and her alleged kidnapper were found.

Further investigation revealed that the kidnapping had been staged by the woman and the kidnapper. Both were subsequently arrested.

While both suspects are under police custody, the investigation continues.
