The handover ceremony of the Westpoint Lodge building, scheduled for today, has been postponed.
The eThekwini municipality stated that this decision was made to give the City and Provincial governments ample time to complete all necessary processes for a smooth handover.
The KwaZulu-Natal department of Public works and Infrastructure is to officially handover Westpoint Lodge building to the eThekwini municipality.
On November 6, 2024, these departments signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to assist each other in addressing the problem of hijacked buildings, which frequently lead to other issues like illegal electricity connections, overcrowding, and risks to structural safety.
Public works minister Dean Macpherson applauded the eThekwini Municipality for being the first city to launch this project.
Days of state buildings standing empty, attracting crime and chasing away investments are coming to an end
EThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, said that the signing of the MOU reflects their commitment to collaborating with all levels of government and the private sector to leverage state assets for economic growth.
