The South African Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu has made a strong plea to victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to stand firm in seeking justice and avoid being influenced to withdraw their cases.

In a media statement released on Tuesday, 28 January 2025, Mchunu emphasized the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) unwavering commitment to eradicating GBV and holding perpetrators accountable.

He expressed grave concern over a disturbing incident currently under scrutiny at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court. A married woman, who was allegedly shot by her husband in front of their minor child, remains hospitalised in the ICU. Despite the severity of the incident, reports indicate that the victim has submitted a statement requesting the accused’s release on bail.

The victim reportedly cited financial dependence as a reason for supporting the accused’s bail application, fearing that his continued incarceration would result in job loss and financial instability for the family. It has also been alleged that the accused promised the victim R1 million and a vacation to resolve the situation.

Mchunu condemned these developments, stating that such coercion undermines justice and perpetuates cycles of abuse.

The SAPS is unwavering in its fight against GBV and will continue to provide the necessary support to victims. Such false assurances often never materialize and serve only to perpetuate cycles of abuse. We must work together to ensure that those who commit these heinous crimes are held accountable.”

In closing, the Minister urged everyone to work together to ensure that those who commit such crimes are held accountable.
