The University of South Africa (Unisa) has firmly refuted claims that Zimbabwean national Walter Magaya is an alumnus or graduate of the institution. This comes in response to a viral video circulating on social media, in which Magaya allegedly asserts his association with the university.
In an official statement issued on January 29, 2025, Unisa expressed serious concern over the misinformation spreading in the public domain. The university confirmed that after reviewing its records, no evidence was found of Magaya ever being registered as a student or graduating from Unisa.

Unisa’s investigation was prompted by a media inquiry from an international news platform. The university verified that any certificates Magaya presents as being from Unisa are fraudulent.
Furthermore, Unisa became aware of another social media clip in which Magaya claims to have received an honorary doctorate from the institution. The university categorically denied ever awarding him such an honor.
Unisa strongly condemned Magaya’s statements, stating that they harm the institution’s reputation and brand credibility. The university has signaled its intention to take corrective legal action against these false claims.
We believe that conduct of this nature damages and brings our brand into disrepute, and we reserve the right to take appropriate corrective action.
The university has urged relevant authorities to take necessary legal steps to address the issue and prevent further dissemination of misinformation. The issue of falsified academic credentials has become a growing concern globally, as individuals attempt to gain credibility through fraudulent means. Institutions like Unisa, known for their academic integrity, continue to take a firm stand against such practices to preserve their reputation.
