Trump Pulls US from UN Human Rights Council, Cuts UNRWA Funding

NEWSWORLD

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, officially withdrawing the United States from the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council and halting funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (URNWA) for Palestines Refugees Agency in the Near East is a UN agency dedicated to providing assistance, support and protection to Palestines in refugees. The URNWA focuses on providing aid such as healthcare, education and shelter, among other forms of aid.

Trump makes this announcement of defunding the URNWA prior to the visit of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House. Netanyahu is a known strong critic of the URNWA, long since accusing the organisation of being involved in terror activities against Israel.

Danny Danon, Israel’s UN Ambassador shares the same sentiment as Netanyahu. “UNRWA has long lost its status as an independent humanitarian organisation and has turned into a terrorist authority controlled by Hamas under the guise of a humanitarian agency,” shared Danon.

The US is one of URNWA’s biggest donors and is not the only donor to withdraw its funding. Since the terrorist accusations in 2023, the agency has lost several donors.

The URNWA say that these claims are part of a misinformation and disinformation campaign merely targeting at them.
