Three SANDF Soldiers Laid to Rest After Deadly DRC Deployment

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) laid to rest three of their fallen soldiers this morning.

Rifleman Calvin Louis Moagi of the 2 SA Infantry Battalion was laid to rest on Sunday, 23 February, in Tzaneen, Limpopo. Staff Sergeant Molahleli Molahlehi of the 44 Parachute Regiment was honored in a burial ceremony in Seloshesha, Free State, while Rifleman Sebetane Chokoe of the 4 SA Infantry Battalion was laid to rest in Polokwane, Limpopo.

Sergeant Molahlehi Molahlehi, 54, had been deployed 5 times before.

These soldiers are part of the 14 SANDF soldiers that lost their lives in efforts of peacekeeping in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The SANDF held a full military service to pay their last respects to Rifleman Moagi. Different squads were present at the funeral but most importantly his colleagues he worked with in his station in Zeerust.

These funerals follows the funeral of five other fallen soldiers who were laid to rest on Saturday, 22 February.

Among others, Rifleman Richard Mobe, was one of the soldiers that were laid to rest on Saturday in Botshabelo, Free State.

Mobe’s brother, who is also in the SANDF said that in as much as they are saddened by the loss of his brother, they are proud that he died doing what he loved.

It’s a sad and difficult moment but I think as a family we are at peace.

Colonel Henry Gordon of the 44 Parachute Regiment commanded Mobe’s dedication and professionalism.

In Paul Roux, at Rifleman Andries Tshidiso Mabele’s funeral, Brig General KC Pakade said that he remembers Mabele as the shining star that brought the SANDF family and his family together and that they [SANDF] will not neglect his family after his passing.

Minister Angie Motshega said that the department is committed to giving support to the families of the deceased SANDF soldiers, especially the children. She also said they will provide all the necessary support to those that are still in the DRC.

Those who are still in the mission; we will work with them and make sure they get all the necessary support. We are expecting the injured ones, they’ll be back soon.
