Pretoria, South Africa – Notorious convict Thabo Bester is set to appear in court to request access to a laptop while serving his sentence, despite concerns over potential security risks.
Bester, a convicted murderer, rapist, and serial fraudster, says he requires the laptop to prepare for his upcoming trial, scheduled for February 10 next year. The trial relates to charges stemming from an attempted prison break.
However, the Department of Correctional Services has denied Bester’s request, citing his history of utilizing laptops for illicit activities. In 2022, Bester infamously used a laptop to fake his own death and escape from Mangaung Prison, and subsequently committed fraud, swindling millions from unsuspecting victims.
Bester’s legal team will argue that denying laptop access infringes on his right to adequately prepare his defense.
