The South African Police Services (SAPS) have started a manhunt for the leader who was spotted at Shaft 11, Stilfontein mines, last week.
North West Provincial Commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng ordered maximum resources to be mobilised for the operation.
According to records, James Neo “Tiger” Tshoaeli was never booked into holding cells with the other illegal miners and there are no records of his admission to the local hospital for medical care.
Tiger has been named in multiple statements as one of the ringleaders leading the underground operations. He is also accused by fellow miners for the deaths that occurred underground. He is also facing accusations of assault and torture, based on videos held by the police.
Tiger is a fugitive of justice and is considered dangerous. The community of Stilfontein is urged to report any information they might have of the fugitive’s whereabouts to the Stilfontein police station.
Asaneng shared his disappointment, saying it was an embarrassment to the Vala Umgodi operation started in December 2023. He promised to make sure the people responsible for the escape are held accountable and that Tiger is found.
