The SAPS clarified concerns over the unauthorised sharing of suspects’ personal information, initially provided to community leaders to assist in locating next of kin of those who were involved in the illegal mining. An investigation has been launched after personal information, including names, nationalities, and birthdates, was improperly shared on social media platforms.

Regarding allegations that police detonated explosives at Shaft 10, the SAPS dismissed the claims as baseless. According to a media statement released , an inspection by the SAPS explosives team found no evidence of any blasting or explosions at the site.

Those spreading these falsehoods are reminded of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956, which criminalises the communication of false information regarding explosions. The SAPS is consulting its legal team to take appropriate action against those responsible

In response to claims that a volunteer was arrested, Singabakho Nxumalo from the Department of Correctional Services (DSC) debunked the allegations. The individual, Mzwandile Mkwayi, is a parolee under the DSC. He was taken to the Klerksdorp Community Corrections Office for violating parole conditions , including leaving his designated jurisdiction and engaging with the media without prior authorisation. This was strictly for administrative purposes, Mkwayi remains on parole and is not under police custody.

The SAPS together with the DSC urged the public to refrain from spreading false information that undermines their efforts as the Vala Umgodi deployments continue to prevent and combat illicit mining activities in Stilfontein.
