Electricity minister Kogisentsho Ramokgopa has announced that the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy plans to procure 2,500MW of nuclear generation capacity and will be gazetted
The minister indicated that South Africans would start to see the benefit of the new nuclear generation capacity within three to four years
“We are starting now with procuring 2,500 megawatts of a nuclear energy” Minister of Electricity Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa
“We continue to make every effort to address load shedding because the benefit of Nuclear won’t be seen tomorrow you are not going to see it in a years time or 2 years, but in three to four years that’s when you’ll begin to see this benefits” Said Ramokgopa
Ramokgopa’s declaration comes after the DMRE got approval from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for its proposal to buy 2,500MW of nuclear production by August 2021.
