President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized the importance of teachers actively monitoring their students through to grade 12 in an effort to reduce the dropout rate.

During a speech at the National Teachers’ Day event, which saw the participation of hundreds of educators, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube, and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Ramaphosa highlighted the vital role teachers play in student success.

He remarked that it is essential for educators to ensure their students complete the full 12-year education cycle.

“A dedicated teacher provides their students with attention, support, motivation, and understanding. When a student is absent, the teacher should be the first to notice, allowing us to address potential dropouts proactively. Many children fail to complete their education, and exemplary teachers serve as role models who inspire students to reach their full potential,” he stated during the awards ceremony in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.
