Employees at uShaka Marine World, a popular tourist spot in Durban, are currently engaged in a protest over their salary demands. As a result, the attraction has been temporarily shut down. One of the key demands put forth by the workers is a 15% increase in their salaries.
uShaka Marine World has been facing financial challenges in recent years, which has contributed to the dissatisfaction among employees regarding their wages.
Regional secretary of the South African Municipal Workers Union Xolani Dube said the entity would remain closed until workers’ demands are met.
Months of negotiations between the eThekwini Municipality and the South African Municipal Workers Union failed to yield an agreement on wage adjustments. This impasse led the municipality to make the decision to close uShaka Marine World in order to ensure the safety of its guests.
The eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality is yet to comment on the strike.
