A case of alleged corruption within the South African Police Service unfolds today as Police Constable Minenhle Makhaye appears in the Durban Magistrate’s Court. Makhaye, 27, is accused of possessing a bank card belonging to a hijack victim and 105 other unknown bank cards.
The charges against Makhaye include fraud and defeating the ends of justice. Prosecutors allege that he took the hijack victim’s card while driving the recovered vehicle to the Malvern police station.
This incident is linked to a devastating hijacking at a fast-food outlet last month, resulting in the tragic death of 11-year-old Zarah Ramsamy.
Tragic Circumstances
During the hijacking, Ramsamy’s family managed to flee, but she hid under the vehicle. Heartbreakingly, the hijackers drove over her, leading to her fatal injuries. Although Makhaye is not linked to the hijacking or murder of Ramsamy, the State may pursue additional charges against him.
Investigation Ongoing
The discovery of over 100 bank cards in Makhaye’s possession has raised concerns about potential connections to multiple hijackings. As the investigation continues, the court will examine the evidence against Makhaye.
