The Peace and Security Cluster held a media briefing this morning, January 21, 2025, at the Good Hope Chamber in Parliament, Cape Town.

Four chairpersons from the National Assembly’s Peace and Security Cluster monitoring committees spoke to the media today. They were Ms. Kgomotso Ramolobeng, Chairperson of the Correctional Services Committee; Ian Cameron, Chairperson of the Police Portfolio Committee; the Chairperson of the Justice and Constitutional Development Portfolio Committee; and Mosa Chabane, Chairperson of the Home Affairs Portfolio Committee.

This is part of the 7th Parliament’s weekly briefings with the theme “Deepening the Values of Peace, Justice, Safety, and Security.” The main goal of these briefings is to stay transparent and keep the public informed.

The brief will also highlight the important work done by these committees since the start of the 7th Parliament. It will focus on improving oversight, getting more public involvement, and making progress on laws in different areas of the cluster.

Chairperson of the portfolio committee on Justice and Constitutional Development stated that the Office of the State Attorney faces significant challenges, including corruption, resistance to policy changes, and issues such as limited capacity, resources, infrastructure, and funding. Legal practitioners have also raised concerns about payment delays. To address these issues, the committee will oversee the implementation of the legal sector transformation, including the legal sector quota.

“The committee has been informed that the department is in the process of establishing the legal sector charter council. The council will play a pivotal role in overseeing the legal professionals’ compliance with the legal sector quoted”

In his presentation, the Chairperson of the Home Affairs Portfolio, Mosa Chabane, said that modernizing processes in the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) remains a top priority. While good progress has been made, there are still troubling cases of corruption in how documents are applied for and issued.
