On Saturday, October 5, 2024, a joint operation by Operation Vala Umgodi authorities yielded significant results in Thabong Extension, near Welkom.
At approximately 13:15, law enforcement officers intercepted seven suspects engaged in illicit gold processing activities. The suspects were found washing gold ores from gold-bearing sand.
Seized Items:
- 40.02 kilograms of gold-bearing material
- One self-made phenduka (gold processing device)
- Phenduka stand
- Seven metal balls used for separation
Arrests and Charges:
The seven suspects were arrested and charged with:
- Possession of suspected gold-bearing material
- Possession of gold processing equipment
- Contravention of the Immigration Act
The suspects are currently detained in police custody and will appear in the Welkom Magistrate Court soon
