New Arrest in
Killing of Free State Police Officers

A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the tragic killing of Constable Sipho Mohapi and Constable Gedione Motloung. The two officers from
Namahadi Visible Policing were shot and killed on January 4, 2025, while responding to a house robbery in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), along with several other police units, including Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Provincial Organised Crime, and the Local Criminal Record Center (LCRC), worked together to track down the suspect. He was apprehended in Phuthaditjhaba on January 17, 2025.

Marasane Kabelo Anmony, a 27-year-old South African, was arrested on January 16, 2025, in Makgalaneng village. He appeared in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on January 17, 2025, facing charges of murder and robbery. His case was postponed to January 24, 2025, to allow for his bail application alongside his co-accused, Pakiso Lethako, a 32-year-old Lesotho citizen arrested on January 15, 2025.

The newly arrested 53-year-old suspect is expected to appear in court on January 20, 2025, for his first hearing.

The arrest brings the total number of suspects in custody to three, but investigators have indicated that more arrests could follow. Members of the public with any information that might help in the case are encouraged to contact Detective Captain Michael Masekoa at 082 455 6063.

Lieutenant General (Dr./Adv.) SG Lebeya, the National Head of the Hawks, commended the team for their efforts in solving the case. He asked investigators to keep working hard to find justice and make sure everyone responsible is held accountable.

This case shows the dangers police officers face every day and how important it is for the community to work together to make sure justice is served.
