Controversial celebrity gossip blogger, Musa Khawula abandoned his bail application at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. This decision follows his latest legal woes, including charges of hate speech, crimen injuria, and violating Section 19 of the Cyber Crimes Act 19 of 2020 .
Khawula, known for his outspoken and often inflammatory commentary on social media, has been at the center of multiple legal disputes. His latest case stems from allegedly defamatory remarks he made about businessman Ze Nxumalo, and the subsequent posting of Nxumalo’s wife, former Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green-Nxumalo, on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Appearing in court on Wednesday, Khawula opted to drop his bail application, with his lawyer, Ofentse Nkgwang, citing a separate case in Carletonville that required his attention.
“I have consulted with the accused. There have been certain developments from the last sitting where the accused was charged for another matter in the Carletonville court where he is appearing,” said Nkgwang.
After consulting extensively with the accused, we have decided to abandon the bail application. We will not be proceeding with the bail application anymore. I’m not quite sure how far the investigations are with regards to this matter.
He also requested that, if investigations into this case were complete, closure be provided so that Khawula’s legal team could prepare for trial.
While his case at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court has been postponed to February 18, Khawula is also set to appear at the Fochville Magistrate’s Court on February 5 for a separate bail application.
This is not the first time Khawula has found himself in legal hot water. In July 2023 he was jailed for 90 days for contempt of court after refusing to comply with a defamation verdict obtained by ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula’s wife, Nozuko Mbalula. The verdict barred him from making corruption allegations against her on social media.
With multiple cases pending and his outspoken nature continuing to attract legal scrutiny, Khawula’s legal battles are far from over.
