MKP Youth League Celebrates Valentine’s Day Differently

GENERAL NEWS

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the Umkhonto WeSizwe Party Youth League National (MKLY) Youth Detachment is encouraging South Africa’s youth to embrace self-love.

The MKLY National Detachment describes this as a “deeper, more profound love”, one that encompasses self-love, love for one’s people, and a commitment to true liberation.

February 14 is traditionally a day to celebrate romantic love, but this year, the MKLY National Detachment is urging young people to look beyond that. They encourage viewing the day as a celebration of self-love, not just as an emotional expression, but as a political act.

On this day, the youth is encouraged to take back charge of their lives and to change the trajectory of their lives. South Africa has one of the highest unemployment and crime rates amongst the youth, in the world.

The MKLY National Detachment says, that true self-love comes with responsibility, stating, “Every young person who truly loves themselves has a duty to rise up, organize, and claim their rightful place in the fight for a free and just South Africa.”

The organisation further calls upon the youth to stand with them during the June 16 2025 movement, just as the youth of 1976 stood together.

“On this Valentine’s Day, let love be revolutionary. Let love be the weapon that fuels our fight for a South Africa that belongs to its people,” encourages the MKLY National Detachment.
