MK Party Challenges SABC’s Use of ‘GNU’

NEWSPOLITICSTOP STORIES

The High Court in Johannesburg has heard arguments in the case of the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party against the SABC over the broadcaster’s use of the term ‘Government of National Unity’ (GNU) to describe the current coalition government.

The MK Party, represented by Advocate Dali Mpofu, argues that the GNU name is misleading and inaccurate, as the coalition excludes big political parties such as the MK Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Mpofu argued that a true GNU requires representation from 85% to 90% of the electorate, which the current arrangement fails to achieve.

Former President Jacob Zuma also criticized the SABC, stating that as a public institution, it has a responsibility to avoid spreading false and politically biased narratives. Zuma described the coalition as a partnership between the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC), facilitated by the exclusion of larger opposition parties.

Judge Denise Carol Fisher questioned the constitutional basis of the challenge, urging Mpofu to demonstrate how the term GNU violates any constitutional rights, particularly regarding human dignity.

The SABC has defended its position, arguing that the matter is not reviewable under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) and that internal remedies have not been exhausted.
