Minister Simelane on to NDHS to Fast-Track Housing for KZN Flood Victims

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane has instructed a team of officials from the National Department of Human Settlements (NDHS) to expedite the provision of emergency housing assistance to households affected by the floods in KwaZulu-Natal.

The affected areas include eThekwini townships such as Lamontville and Umlazi, as well as the uGu and King Cetshwayo District Municipalities.

 “We deeply regret the loss of life due to the floods and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. I have instructed our team to collaborate with other government sectors and relevant institutions to assist the affected households, with a focus on providing emergency shelter,” stated Simelane.

“Our team will carry out the necessary assessments to guide our intervention in accordance with our Emergency Housing Policy,” says Simelane.

A team will carry out initial technical assessments and register beneficiaries. These actions will guide potential interventions, including rebuilding damaged structures, relocating affected households, and supplying building materials to help restore damaged homes or structures.

Minister Simelane urged for full cooperation between the government, stakeholders, and communities.
