In an effort to monitor and ensure the functionality of schools in KwaZulu-Natal, the MEC for Education, Mr. Sipho Hlomuka, conducted a comprehensive visit to Mariathal Combined School in the Harry Gwala District on 31 January. Accompanied by Cllr Mr. Zamo Nxumalo and the District Director, Mrs. Bongiwe Ntombela, the visit was to assess the school’s readiness for the 2025 academic year and address the challenges faced by the institution.

Mariathal Combined School, which teaches students from Grade R to Grade 12, is an important part of the community. During the visit, Mrs. Ntombela was happy to welcome the MEC and talked about how the district is committed to doing its best.

We have a beautiful slogan in Harry Gwala District, that says, 100 percent here we come! With that, we do not only hope for optimal achievement, but we are working hard towards it too, said Mrs. Ntombela.

This mantra reflects the district’s determination to improve education outcomes for all learners in the area.

The school’s Principal, Ms. TN Mncadi, gave a detailed report on Mariathal Combined School’s achievements and the challenges affecting the community. She spoke openly about issues like poverty and substance abuse, which make it harder for students to succeed. However, she stressed the school’s dedication to providing quality education for every learner, despite these difficulties.

Cllr Mr. Zamo Nxumalo also took the opportunity to welcome MEC Hlomuka and commend the school’s efforts. “We are grateful to the Principal and the School Governing Body for their hard work and dedication in achieving remarkable results,” he said.

The visit to Mariathal Combined School is part of MEC Sipho Hlomuka’s broader initiative to ensure that schools across KwaZulu-Natal are adequately prepared and equipped to deliver quality education in the year ahead.

As part of his oversight duties, the MEC has pledged to closely monitor schools, provide essential support, and address any challenges that may arise, reinforcing his commitment to leaving no learner behind.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment from all stakeholders to collaborate in improving education in the district.
