The court case against former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has been delayed once again. The High Court in Pretoria has decided to push back the case, now set for March 28, 2025. This is a significant postponement in a case that has already attracted widespread public attention.

Mapisa-Nqakula is facing serious charges, including 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering. She is accused of using her position as a government official to benefit herself through state contracts.

The former speaker was arrested in April 2024 and was given bail of R50,000. As her lawyers get ready for the trial, Mapisa-Nqakula has asked for more documents from the prosecution, including police investigation files. She says these documents are important for her to properly defend herself.

In a new development, a document called an affidavit has been submitted as evidence against Mapisa-Nqakula. The affidavit, given by defense contractor Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu, was filed under Section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Act. This section lets people give testimony in exchange for protection from being charged with a crime.

The affidavit describes a troubling case of alleged corruption, with Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu accusing Mapisa-Nqakula of using her powerful position to demand money for help. While these claims haven’t been tested in court yet, they are an important lead in the case. If the accusations are proven true, they could play a big role in deciding the outcome of the trial.

For now, Mapisa-Nqakula denies all the charges against her. She has not yet pleaded guilty or not guilty, and it is still unclear how the legal process will go.

The case will resume in March 2025, and with it, the ongoing scrutiny of Mapisa-Nqakula’s actions while in office.
