In the midst of the ongoing challenges faced by South Africa’s power utility Eskom, Sylvia Lucas, an African National Congress (ANC) MP and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) deputy chair, has expressed her belief that load shedding should not be considered a catastrophic event.
Lucas made the remarks in Afrikaans during the debate adding that as soon as Ramaphosa talks about load shedding, “there is sabotage”.
As part of her speech at SONA, Lucas highlighted the ANC’s accomplishments in various sectors, emphasizing the positive impact of its policies and initiatives on the lives of South Africans.
Many citizens took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with her statements.
Some X (Twitter) users argued that Lucas’s remarks displayed a lack of empathy for the everyday challenges South Africans face during periods of load shedding. They criticized her for downplaying the impact of this recurring problem on businesses, households, and the overall economy.
