The South African Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, has announced a new initiative aimed at fully automating and digitizing the department’s services over the next five years.
Dubbed “Home Affairs @ Home,” the plan seeks to eliminate the need for citizens to physically visit Home Affairs branches. Instead, services will be accessible online 24/7.
According to the department, the goal is to enhance efficiency, reduce wait times, and improve overall citizen experience.
Existing digital initiatives, such as the eHomeAffairs online application portal, Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS), and Smart ID Card services, will be built upon as part of this plan.
The digital transformation is part of the Government of National Unity’s efforts to bring services closer to the people.
No timeline has been provided for the rollout of specific services, but the department aims to complete the digitization process within the next five years.
The move is expected to significantly impact how citizens interact with the Home Affairs department.
