Israel and Hamas called a truce after reaching a deal to cease fire and release hostages.

The deal follows a meeting Qatar Prime Minister, Muhammad bin Jassim Al Thani held in his office with Israel and Hamas negotiators.

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, announced that the agreement will take effect on Sunday, 19 January. During the first phase, which will last six weeks, Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages.

Regarding phases two and three; the details will be finalised during the implementation of phase one.

The agreement comes after a 15-month conflict that began on October 7, 2023, when a Hamas-led military group launched an unexpected attack on Israel.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health over 46 000 people died in the Israel attacks.

President Joe Biden takes pride in the United States’ diplomatic efforts to secure this deal and expresses hope for a “permanent end to the war.”
