Public hearings are set to commence today at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.
This separate case focuses on Israel’s compliance with its obligations under the Genocide Convention in relation to its ongoing military offensive in Gaza, and is distinct from the earlier case brought by South Africa against Israel.
The decision to hold these hearings stems from the request made by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2022, where member states overwhelmingly voted in favor of seeking an advisory opinion from the World Court.
It is worth noting that this specific case is distinct from South Africa’s legal challenge against Israel’s compliance with its obligations under the Genocide Convention. The focus here is solely on Israel’s activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and East Jerusalem.
