The South Africa National Defence Force (SANDF) released a statement reporting the death of nine soldiers killed during a M23 attack, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Friday 24 January .
The soldiers died while holding defense against M23 rebels who were trying to access and take over the provincial capital of the eastern DRC, Goma.

These heroic deaths came after SANDF had reported that 3 soldiers had died and 14 wounded.
After two years of bravery and a stern defence, the soldiers were able to stop the M23’s attempts to take over of Goma and successfully drove them back.
The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans of South Africa, Angie Motshekga and the rest of the South African Defence Department sends their heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and the whole defence family.
