The Department of Health and other officials took an oversight visit to the Lusaka clinic in Mamelodi on Wednesday.

MMC of Health, Tshegofatso Mashabela together with the senior manager for the Department of Health, Section 79 chairperson and the Ward councilor visited the clinic to assess the situation.

The residents of The City of Tshwane had requested for a clinic before 2016. The construction of R49 million to build the Lusaka clinic commenced in 2019 and was set to be completed in 2023. Two years later, the clinic is still incomplete.

This is reportedly due to the department often getting contractors that do not have the capacity to handle such projects, which then leads to issues of incompetence such as subcontractors and workers not being paid. Their latest contractor was dismissed due to similar reasons.

Curently ,the department is dealing with legal challenges from the disputes that came with that contractor’s dismissal.

According to the City of Tshwane, Lusaka Clinic was supposed to be a flagship project for the metro and the first green facility of its kind.

The Mayor of Tshwane, Nasiphi Moya stated that the clinic is a critical need for the community of Mamelodi.

What is important is us putting a budget for the next financial year so that we can resume the project and complete it.

At the beginning of last year, former MMC of Health, Rina Marx, also reviewed the progress of the clinic and highlighted the challenges experienced with the project.

Since September 2023, construction has been negatively impacted by contractual disputes and challenges between the main contractor and subcontractors.

The department apologised to the community of Mamelodi for the delay in delivering their services. The MMC is said to be working with a team to come up with interventions of ensuring the project continues.
