Johannesburg – The family of anti-apartheid icon Chris Hani and the South African Communist Party (SACP) have reiterated their demand for a formal inquest into Hani’s assassination.
This comes after Janusz Walus, the Polish national convicted of Hani’s murder, was deported back to Poland on Friday. Walus’s parole had been a point of contention, with the Hani family and the SACP arguing that he and his co-conspirators had never fully disclosed the truth surrounding the assassination.
The Constitutional Court had previously ruled that denying Walus parole in 2020 was irrational. However, the Hani family and the SACP remain adamant that an inquest is necessary to uncover the truth and bring closure to those affected by Hani’s tragic death.
The renewed call for an inquest has sparked renewed debate about the circumstances surrounding Hani’s assassination and the need for accountability and transparency.
