The funeral service for former Minister Pravin Gordhan, a stalwart of the struggle against apartheid and a veteran of South Africa’s Cabinet, will take place on Thursday, September 19, at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral Category 2 in honor of Gordhan, who passed away on September 13, 2024, at the age of 75, after a period of illness.

Gordhan’s passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from across the political spectrum, with many praising his tireless commitment to public service and his role in shaping South Africa’s democracy.
The Special Official Funeral Category 2 will entail ceremonial elements performed by the South African Police Service.The funeral service will be followed by a private cremation.Mr Gordhan’s family has requested that in lieu of floral tributes, mourners offer donations to charities of their choice, or the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
