In a recent address, Floyd Shivambu, former Deputy President of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and current National Organizer of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, defended the party president’s powers, citing Jacob Zuma’s experience as a former South African president. Shivambu’s comments come amidst his recruitment campaign for the MK Party, which he joined after leaving the EFF.
Shivambu’s Statement
“People on social media were saying why does the MK Party President have so much power: Do you know the powers of the president in this constitution as compared to the powers which he had as a head of state and president, which is nothing,” Shivambu stated.
“As President of South Africa, President Jacob Zuma had the power to appoint all ministers, all director generals, all judges, and chief justice. President Zuma had the power to go to war without consulting anyone, why would we not trust President Jacob Zuma with just administrative powers of appointing provincial conveners and coordinators when we know that he has got the experience?”
Shivambu’s Move to MK Party
Shivambu’s departure from the EFF to join the MK Party, led by Jacob Zuma, has been seen as a significant boost to the party. As National Organizer, Shivambu is expected to develop clearer policies for the struggling party.
