eThekwini Mayor Acknowledges SIU into Durban Water & Sanitation Corruption

Speaking at the Executive Committee (EXCO) meeting on Monday 18 February, eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cllr Cyril Xaba confirmed that he was made aware of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s proclamation notice, which authorizes the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe allegations of corruption and maladministration within the Durban Water and Sanitation Unit (DWS).

The Mayor further explained that the SIU will investigate allegations of maladministration, financial misconduct, and impropriety, as well as whether the provisions of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, 2004 (Act No. 12 of 2004), were violated during the execution of the contract.

Mr. Cyril Xaba also assured the committee that the Water and Sanitation Turnaround Strategy Business Plan, aimed at improving the city’s water supply, will be ready by February 25, 2025, as requested by the City Manager.

 “Last week, we reported that several communities were not receiving a regular water supply for an extended period. Today, we are not interested in excuses or processes; we want to know how many of those communities have started receiving water. I am using the term ‘communities’ and not ‘areas’ deliberately,” said Mr. Cyril Xaba.
