Enyobeni Tavern owners Siyakhangela Ndevu and Vuyokazi Ndevu have been found guilty of providing alcohol to individuals under the legal drinking age of eighteen. The East London Regional Court has ordered each proprietor to pay a fine of R5000 or face a 100-day prison sentence.
The sentencing follows the tragic incident that occurred earlier this year at the Enyobeni Tavern, situated in the heart of Scenery Park. In March 2022, 21 young people lost their lives under suspicious circumstances at the establishment, sparking a national outcry for justice and stricter regulations within the alcohol industry.
During the trial, it was revealed that Siyakhangela Ndevu and Vuyokazi Ndevu had violated the country’s alcohol control laws by serving alcoholic beverages to minors on numerous occasions. The defendants, who had been operating the tavern for several years, failed to verify the age of their patrons adequately, thereby enabling underage individuals to purchase and consume alcohol within their premises.
