The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader and Commander In Chief (CIC) Julius Malema engaged the media at Winnie Madikizela Mandela House today; 3 February, responding to the recent threats made by the president of United States of America (USA) Donald Trump.

This follows after president Trump threatened to cut all future funding to South Africa because he opposes the newly signed Expropriation Bill by president Cyril Ramaphosa.

Trump said the Bill is a “massive human rights violation” treating “certain classes of people very badly” and that the USA won’t stand for it.

In his response to the threats, Malema said the statement by Trump is “offensive and undermines our sovereignty.”

He further mentioned that it serves as a reminder that our reliance on foreign aide and foreign direct investment surrenders us to the will of imperialists.

We want to make it categorically clear to the President of the USA that we are going to expropriate land without compensation and pursue legislative measures to do so, and no threat will stop us. His misinterpretation of the Expropriation Act, which is a mild and cosmetic intervention is an assessment of a measure that is going to be pursued through the amendment of our Constitution as South Africans, and there is nothing he can do to undermine our independence.

The EFF reaffirmed its stance that South Africa needs to strengthen state capacity, build a robust agricultural and industrial economy that is independent of the West, and enhance trade relations with emerging nations like China, Russia, and other BRICS countries.

Malema said the EFF policy is the expropriation of land; it is their first non-negotiable cardinal pillar. Although the Expropriation Bill recently signed by the president has “watered down” their policy, they stand by it.

Malema alluded to the fact the parties opposing the signing in of the Expropriation Bill are now seeking external intervention which seeks to undermine the sovereignty of South Africa.

He further stated that they are more than willing to join the African National Congress (ANC) in the Government of National Unity (GNU) and contribute to its work. However, they cannot do so alongside those who oppose the implementation of progressive policies.

The ANC must know that we are just outside, at the door step. Once they remove the DA [Democratic Alliance] and they want a partner we are in.
