Former President Jacob Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for her alleged involvement in the deadly July 2021 unrest.
The unrest followed Zuma’s imprisonment for contempt of court and resulted in over 300 fatalities. She is facing charges under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act (POCDATARA) and incitement to commit violence.
Accompanied by her legal representative, advocate Dali Mpofu, Zuma-Sambudla handed herself over to the Durban Central police station earlier on Thursday morning, where she was arrested and processed. Her arrest is part of an ongoing investigation led by the Durban Crimes Against the State unit under the Serious Organised Crime Investigation division.
The ongoing prosecution guided investigation brings to a total thus far, 69 arrests and one conviction
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party had called on supporters to attend the court hearing in solidarity with Zuma- Sambudla. In a post on X on Tuesday, the party invited members to “mobilise all ground forces to attend in numbers”.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution requested a transfer of the case to the Durban High Court, citing insufficient evidence at this stage to proceed with a robust prosecution. The court case was postponed to 20 March 2025 for further deliberation.
