On Monday, January 20, at the Protea Magistrates’ Court, Dr. Maweni, whose real name is Makgotso Mofokeng, experienced an awkward moment when she told the court that she did not have a criminal record. However, the prosecutor disagreed, stating that the state has records indicating otherwise.
The controversial Dr. Maweni, and a well-known traditional healer, is facing a 2019 charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. She was arrested on Sunday in Mondeor and has remained in custody. Adding to her troubles, the police are also investigating her connection to four murder cases allegedly committed between 2020 and 2024 in areas like Eldorado Park, Orange Farm, Mondeor, and Bekkersdal.
Her defense lawyer admitted to being aware of a previous case but argued that it had been withdrawn and no further instructions were given regarding it.
In addition to the assault charge, police are investigating Dr. Maweni for four murders allegedly committed between 2020 and 2024 in Eldorado Park, Mondeor, Orange Farm, and Bekkersdal. These new allegations have added more weight to the ongoing case.
In response, Gogo Skhotheni accused Dr. Maweni of being involved in several unsolved murders. Skhotheni claimed Maweni had previously confessed to these crimes while drunk, sharing details with her family, Skhotheni said, “I kept quiet for two years, but after she tried to use my child in her rituals, I won’t stop fighting.”

The investigation is ongoing, and the court proceedings next week are expected to provide more clarity on the case. For now, Dr. Maweni remains in custody as law enforcement officials continue to look into the allegations.
