On January 23, 2025, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) raised concerns about ongoing theft and vandalism targeting government properties. Criminals have been stealing valuable materials like aluminium, cables, and even destroying traffic lights, railway lines, and pylons.
In a recent incident, armed criminals tried to steal steel and aluminium from Public Works House in Pretoria’s Central Business District. Security guards quickly responded, stopping the thieves from causing more damage.
During the confrontation, two suspects were shot while others managed to escape. The criminals were armed with dangerous weapons, including pangas, and are believed to be involved in stealing metal to sell at scrap metal markets.
This kind of vandalism has been happening frequently in Tshwane, and Public Works House has been hit hard by the thefts, including the destruction of fences. The department suspects that some of the thieves might be connected to drug addicts who sell stolen materials for cash.

The DPWI is worried about the growth of the scrap metal industry and how it links to these thefts, which harm the economy and important infrastructure.
The injured suspects were taken to the hospital, and security officers are being questioned as part of an ongoing police investigation. Meanwhile the department is increasing security to protect public assets, which must be preserved for the good of all
