At the City’s Mayoral Awards held at the Durban ICCCity’s Mayoral Awards held at the Durban ICC on Friday, January 24, 2025, the Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, His Worship Cllr. Cyril Xaba, shared his thoughts on the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.
Cllr. Xaba said that the Covid-19 pandemic and the severe floods that affected KwaZulu-Natal were significant challenges for students in the class of 2024. These challenges came at a time when students were supposed to focus on their education. According to the Mayor, these setbacks made it harder for students to reach their full potential.
However, despite these difficulties, Cllr. Xaba praised the achievements of the class of 2024. He believes that if the city and province had not faced such tough situations, the students could have done even better. He emphasized that working together as a community can help overcome challenges and achieve more.
“The impressive achievements of the class of 2024 indicate that if we work together, we can all achieve more,” said Mayor Xaba.

The Mayor’s speech highlights the resilience of the students and the importance of support from the community and local government during difficult times. While the pandemic and floods created obstacles, the class of 2024 showed that with teamwork and determination, success is still possible.
