In a daring early morning operation, Border Management Authority (BMA) guards successfully intercepted a substantial amount of cash at the Oshoek port of entry with eSwatini. Commissioner Masiapato commended the BMA’s swift action
A 39-year-old South African attempted to cross into eSwatini with R424,800 in cash hidden in a black plastic bag. The suspect was charged with violating the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) and the Customs and Excise Act for failing to declare the large cash transaction and improperly declaring goods and currency.
In a brazen move, the suspect attempted to bribe the BMA Border Guards but was thwarted by their diligence. The suspect and seized cash were handed over to the SAPS Hawks for further investigation. The suspect is set to appear before the Elukwatini Magistrate Court on September 25.
On September 20, the same border guard intercepted a Swati national attempting to cross the border illegally, violating bail conditions for charges related to a stolen Toyota Fortuner.
