Johannesburg – The African National Congress (ANC) has axed Obed Bapela as Deputy Chairperson of its International Relations Subcommittee, citing a blatant disregard for party policies on Western Sahara.
Bapela’s ousting comes after he led a South African delegation to meet with Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister on October 7, 2024, sparking outrage within the party. The meeting contradicted the ANC’s long-standing stance against Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara.
“The ANC is deeply concerned by Cde Obed Bapela’s actions, which undermine our party’s principles and resolutions on Western Sahara,” said the ANC in a statement.
Bapela’s failure to provide a full account of the meeting and his apparent disregard for party policies raised questions about his judgment and commitment to the ANC’s values.
Disciplinary Action Looms
The ANC Secretary-General will refer Bapela’s matter to the Chief National Presenter for disciplinary action, citing violations of the party’s constitution.
“Bapela’s actions caused confusion among our allies, including the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Republic government,” the ANC statement read. “Senior cadres must act with revolutionary morality and discipline, upholding the party’s principles at all times.”
The move marks a significant rebuke of Bapela’s actions, emphasizing the ANC’s commitment to its policies and values.
Reaction
The ANC’s decision has been welcomed by many within the party, who see it as a necessary step to maintain accountability and uphold party principles.
