The Johannesburg-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team has made a significant arrest in connection with an alleged fraud case involving a substantial amount of money.
Morwamakgale Abram Maheso, aged 32, was apprehended on a warrant for R 800 000 fraud reportedly related to an incident registered at the Norwood police station in August 2020.
It was revealed that Maheso approached financial institutions Liberty Group and Stanlib on April 16, 2020, in a bid to secure a business investment policy with Liberty.
To initiate the policy, he provided an ABSA bank account for a debit of R800 000.
However, it was discovered during verification that the account did not belong to Maheso but to the Ngwathe Local Municipality in the northern part of the Free State.
The arrest was made on Wednesday, October 15, 2024, and Maheso appeared in the Palm Ridge Specialized Commercial Crimes Court the same day. The investigation conducted by the Hawks unveiled Maheso’s alleged fraudulent conduct, where he attempted to deceive Liberty and the Municipality by using a false account with the intention of obtaining the funds for personal gain.
The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, October 22, 2024, for legal proceedings.
