Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga congratulated learners who have produced excellent results in their Matric National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

The matric class of 2023 has achieved an overall pass rate of 82.9%, a 2.8 percentage points increase compared to their 2022 counterparts. Motshekga praised the 2023 cohort for achieving the highest percentage of Bachelor passes and distinctions in the history of the NSC exams, highlighting the substantial contributions from rural provinces, particularly in Limpopo, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

The Free State led the provinces with an 89.0% pass rate, while Limpopo showed the most improvement with a 7.4% increase

Motshekga said the Free State was the leading province, with an 89.0% pass rate, an increase of 0.5 percentage points from 2022. It was followed by: KwaZulu-Natal, the third-best improved province, which achieved 86.4%, an increase of 3.4 percentage points from 2022;

Gauteng, which recorded a 85.4% pass rate, an increase of 1.0 percentage points from 2022

North West, which attained 81.6%, up 1.8 percentage points from 2022

Western Cape, which achieved a 81.5% pass rate, an increase of 0.1 percentage points from 2022;The second-best improved province,

The Eastern Cape, which recorded a pass rate of 81.4%, an improvement of 4.1 percentage points from 2022

The best-improved province, Limpopo, which attained 79.5%, up 7.4 percentage points from 2022.

Mpumalanga, which achieved 77.0%, a 0.2 percentage point increase from 2022 and Northern Cape, which recorded 75.8%, a 1.6 percentage point increase from 2022.
