
A suspected arson attack on the Public Utility Transport Corporation (Putco) bus depots across Mpumalanga, has left fifty buses destroyed and two employees injured on Monday night, prompting heightened security measures as operations continue.
In a report released on Tuesday, the chaos initially began at the Moloto depot , where a group of assailants ambushed security personnel. According to Putco , the attackers bound security guards , set buses alight and opened fire within the depot.
The four depots affected include Moloto, Wolwekraal, Sitabushwa and Vaalbank in the Mpumalanga province.
Putco spokesperson, Lindokugle Xulu said two employees were injured during the attack. One sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while the other was struck on the head with a chair. Both victims received medical attention and are in stable condition.
He also added that buses are still providing service in the affected areas.
Despite the damage, Putco’s buses are continuing to operate in the affected areas under heightened supervision.
Investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.
