SANDF Soldiers Suffer Casualties as Mortar Bomb Strikes South African Contingent Military Base in DRC
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed that 2 of its soldiers have died in the DRC after a ‘mortar bomb landed inside one of SA’s contingent military bases, The incident occurred on 14th February 2024 at approximately 13:30 local time.
the SANDF has tragically reported two fatalities among its soldiers, while three others sustained injuries. The injured personnel were swiftly transported to the nearest hospital in Goma for immediate medical attention
The affected base is part of the RSA Contingent, which forms a vital component of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Thandi Modise, the Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Mr Thabang Makwetla, the Acting Secretary for Defence, Dr Thobekile Gamede, and the Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, extend their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers.
They also send their heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery to the injured members of the SANDF.
