The National Department of Transport recently released a statement on Sunday, stating that the fuel headache faced by the O.R Tambo International Airport has been resolved.
On 4 January 2025, Natural Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF) burned down, leading to it shutting down. This accident unfortunately led to the shortage jet fuel supply to the O.R Tambo Airport, causing the delay and cancellation of flights.
The Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy announced that 121.1 million litres of jet fuel has been secured for the airport. This was possible with the help of numerous stakeholders, namely SASOL, Airport Company South Africa (ACSA) and Fuel Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA).
The fuel supply will be transported from the Durban Port ,and is expected to arrive in the O.R Tambo airport between 1 February and 10 February 2025, which is in the next week.
Officials are working tirelessly to ensure that this fuel supply arrives in time for the airlines needs. NATREF opens its doors again at the end of February 2025.
These unforeseen circumstances have caused disruption and uncertainty to the O.R Tambo airline, its stakeholders and passengers. Minister Creecy expressed her gratitude and appreciation for everyone’s patience and support and sent her sincerest apologies for any inconveniences that might have been caused as a result.
