The 12 suspects accused of hacking five people to death in Inanda, Durban, earlier this month are set to apply for bail today, 29 January, at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court. They face multiple serious charges, including murder, kidnapping, and attempted murder.

The suspects were arrested hours after the discovery of the five bodies which were dumped at the local sports field in the area. On Friday 17 January, five men – aged between 19 and 26 were found hacked to death in the Bambayi area of Inanda, north of Durban.

According to reports, the men’s bodies were found with multiple injuries including one victim, whose arm had been chopped off.

The arrests have led to protests, with community members gathering outside the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court to demand the release of the 12 suspects. Many residents believe the accused are not criminals but were protecting the community from crime.

“We have repeatedly reported crimes at Mtshebheni Police Station, yet we have seen no visible police presence,” said community member Mduduzi Radebe. “If our brothers and fathers are not released, we will continue mobilizing more community members to join the protest.”

Community members say they will not leave the Magistrate’s Court until the 12 suspects get bail today.
