1 person has died after being exposed to severe cold overnight while in a taxi stuck in traffic in the snow on the N3.
According to emergency services, a taxi carrying passengers got stuck in snow-related traffic on the N3. During a stop for refreshments at the Merrivale shopping center, one of the passengers suddenly collapsed.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) crews responded promptly, finding the individual in a critical state of hypothermia. Despite administering urgent medical care and conducting full resuscitation efforts during transport, the patient’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Unfortunately, the patient was pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital.
The KwaZulu-Natal authorities have reiterated their warning about the dangers of cold weather, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance.
Motorists have been urged to cancel their trips until conditions improve
